According to Will Dunham, (Reuters), US Audio Historians have uncovered the oldest recording in history. The article stated that this recording was done in 1860. Can one imagine what it must have been like in the 1800s and years before that when there was no sound recordings, no vinyl, no cassette tapes, etc? Well, they couldn’t sing along with anything at all. So, how did they entertain themselves? Hey! I know now! They had Shakespeare back then. In those days it was the telling of stories, the writing of books, and poems that were in the spotlight. So, the Mark Twains back then are the Phil Collins and Rolling Stones today. Rolling Stones? Wait a minute! Weren’t they around town performing back then? No! My mistake! Don’t we all remember those excruciating days in creative writing classes when we all had to pretend as if we were Shakespeare? Well, I pretended as if I was Walt Whitman. I just loved using ducks, pigs, goats, and hogs as my characters! Don’t laugh! I am serious. Well, this is what happens when I am taken back to the 1860s when my great, great, great grandmother was still shoveling snow; all kinds of things come out of know where! Ok, then. As I was saying, it must have been really hard to live without whistling to a tune heard on the radio. There is no possible way a youtube junky or a myspace friend would stand for not having any sounds. Can one imagine a youtube video without recorded sound?
